As any significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
