Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
