European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
