Area Law Enforcement
Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior political figure said the attack left him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
