Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
